Gear Watch: Outdoor Retailer, Part 3

Some of the most interesting, innovative, and cutting-edge new gear was unveiled at the recent Outdoor Retailer show in Salt Lake City. Here are today's items to watch for. Part 3 of 3.

Therm-a-Rest Alpine Down Blanket
Similar in design to the Therm-a-Rest Ventra Down Comforter, the Alpine Down Blanket connects directly to your Therm-a-Rest inflatable pad and provides insulation only on top, eliminating the bulk and weight underneath (the pad instead provides the requisite insulating ability). You'll need the Therm-a-Rest Fitted Sheet or (much lighter) Mattress Snap Kit to attach it. The 700-fill down blanket is rated to 35 degrees Fahrenheit and will be available in January. 22 ounces; ~$200.

Hammock Bliss Ultralight
One of the lightest, most compact full-size hammocks on the market. Weighs only 13 ounces and packs down to fist-size. $39.95.

eGear X-Flare Pro
Get "searchlight grade illumination" with this ultra-bright, ultra-powerful LED headlamp. At maximum brightness, it pumps out 375 lumen. Compare this to typical backcountry headlamps, which cast a mere 50 -100 lumen. (Read all the details on lumens here in one of my earlier posts.) The rechargeable battery pack can be attached to the headstrap, or removed and carried elsewhere on your body. Find it on pages 8-9 of their 2011 catalog. 12 ounces with batteries, price not yet announced.
