Gear Watch: Outdoor Retailer 2010

Twice a year, gear junkie nirvana occurs in Salt Lake City. Known as Outdoor Retailer, this smorgasbord convention of every outdoor gear manufacturer under the sun highlights all the latest and greatest new gear before it hits the retail shelves for the next season.

Summer Outdoor Retailer just wrapped up this past week. Over the next few posts, we'll explore some of the most interesting, innovative, and cutting-edge new gear unveiled at the show. Here are today's three items to watch for.

Easton Kilo Tent
The latest entry into the ultralight double-wall tent category. As the name implies, it weighs less than a kilogram (2 pounds, 2 ounces). It's designed for two people; the 91-inch length accommodates even taller hikers. Innovative "Carbon Ion" poles shave ounces by eliminating the internal shock cord and replacing it with Easton's new patent-pending AirLock connector system. $399.

SteriPEN Sidewinder
This is the first battery-free, hand-crank UV purifier. Fill up the included one-liter water bottle, attach it to the Sidewinder, and crank the handle until the green light appears. Available in September, 16.6 ounces, $99.95. Also check out the Adventurer Opti, the lightest-weight UV purifier on the market (3.6 ounces, including batteries), $99.95.

Hydro Flask Growler
This small, new manufacturer of stainless steel, double-wall containers has introduced the first growler-sized (and shaped) container for quaffing cold beer in the backcountry. 64-ounce capacity, $49.99. So new it hasn't even appeared on the Hydro Flask site, though you can read about it in this press release.
