I want to highlight New Hampshire-based NEMO Equipment, the next installment in my ongoing series of posts on Northeast-based gear manufacturers. Since its founding in 2002, this young, Nashua-based company has experienced rapid growth, spurred in large part by an extensive series of industry awards for its ground-breaking tent designs.
I first profiled this young company in 2007 as part of a round-up of Northeast-based manufacturers in my regular Equipped column (read the article here). At the time, the company was making headlines for its air-supported tent pole technology, which uses large-diameter inflatable poles for support, making the tent package both lighter weight and smaller to pack. (Learn more about the technology here.) Current products utilizing this technology include the 2.5-pound, one-person GoGo EX ($299) and the roomy, two-person, 4.8-pound, single-wall Morpho AR (pictured right; $399).
NEMO has since evolved along more traditional tent lines, and now features a number of award-winning tents that utilize more standard pole technology. Most notable among these is the three-person, 5.9-pound, ultra-spacious Losi 3P. In 2009, it was awarded a Gear of the Year award from Outside magazine and Best All-Around 3 Person Tent from Backpacker magazine.
NEMO currently produces a dozen different tents for activities as varied as ultralight adventure racing and extreme conditions, four-season mountaineering. You can browse NEMO's full line of tents here.
The company is also remarkable for its commitment to green manufacturing and sustainability. This effort, dubbed NEMO G.R.N. (Green Rethinking by NEMO) has so far produced the NANO OZ (left), a two-person tent made from more than 90% recycled materials, a great rarity in the tent world; and a series of accessories (pillows, wallets, tote bags, small backpacks) made from recycled materials. Learn more about NEMO's green efforts here.
NEMO products are available for purchase directly from their website, or through REI, EMS, and a handful of other outdoor specialty shops. NEMO is also active in supporting local outdoor events and festivals, including several ice climbing festivals this winter. Stay up-to-date by following the NEMO blog.
